Waipahu High-Class of '65 Reunion-2009
Kilauea Military Camp-Volcano, Hawaii

We have picked an exciting and interesting place for our next reunion. Kilauea Military Camp is located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There is much to see and do here especially with recent eruptions and steam venting out of Halemaumau Crater. KMC is charming and a great place to have a reunion because of its isolation and amenities available to its guests.

Tentatively, we have decided on October 9, 10, and 11 as the reunion dates. This would be the weekend preceding the Discoverer's Day weekend. For those who might want to tour other parts of the Big Island, this would make your trip here worthwhile (especially with costly travel expenses.) This is a tentative itinerary:

Friday, October 11
- Check-in; Heavy pupus and drinks/cocktails

Saturday, October 10 - Golfing at Volcano Country Club for those interested; tours for those who haven't been here before; Hilo Farmer's Market. Dinner to be catered.

Sunday, October 11 - Check out by 11:00 am

Please click on the Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) website www.kmc-volcano.com/rates.asp to get an idea of the rates for rooms. Some may want to split the cost of the 2 or 3 bedroom apartments. We will give you more information next year about making reservations there. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE RESERVATIONS YET.

Coco (Cornelia Anguay) and I have been meeting to plan for our reunion. We have been receiving positive comments and interest, so we'll keep you updated from time to time. Until then, A Hui Ho, Malama Pono......Coco and Amy

Where: Pacific Beach Hotel Grand Ballroom

Cost: $50 if registered by September 17; $60 after that

Last year 382 classmates from 22 high schools throughout the State of Hawaii gathered at the Pacific Beach Hotel for a grand birthday celebration! That first event was so popular that folks kept asking for another one so here it is! The Fabulous Woody will again spin the vinyls and Champ from OC16 will reprise his role as MC for the night. It looks like we'll be getting Uncle Tom Moffatt for that nostalgic look back, too. Great food, music and lots of dancing.....remember the Twist, Mashed Potato and the Continental? Maybe a dance contest.....things are still in the planning.

Memories of Waipahu

For those who want another trip down memory lane I'm passing on some information on a book by Waipahu grad Michael Yamamoto.

Waipahu…Recollections from a Sugar Plantation Community in Hawaii

by Michael T. Yamamoto, Nina (Ota) Sylva, Karen N. Yamamoto

The title says it all. The Principal author, Michael T. Yamamoto, interviewed about 200 people who recalled stories about the times when they lived in Waipahu.

Waipahu derives its name from the Hawaiian words, wai meaning water; and pahu meaning to burst forth. The town is named after the spring (now capped) that gushed forth some 42.5 cubic feet of water per second when the early Hawaiians first discovered it.

The book begins by locating and defining the town of Waipahu. Then the reader is taken through the town as one might take a walking or driving tour. Along the way, famous landmarks and businesses are located and some well-know personalities are introduced. Much of the book, however, contains quotes from people who lived the life of a plantation community.

Maps of Waipahu are included to show locations of areas described and keyed to various eras between 1900 and 2000.

The early Hawaiians considered Waipahu to be the capital of Oahu…before discovery of Hawaii by the Western world, royalty would often gather there especially relishing the fresh water gushing from artesian springs.

The Oahu Sugar Co. was stared by Benjamin Franklin Dillingham in 1897. The impact Oahu Sugar Co. made on the history of Waipahu is evidenced by the town celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 1997.

Get your personal copy of the book now and have a part of Waipahu’s colorful history.

LAS VEGAS 60th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

The 60th birthday bash in Las Vegas was a winner! Fifty-two classmates and their spouses attended the party on July 20 at the California Hotel. Despite the 105º heat, everyone had lots of fun reminiscing about old times and catching up on where we are in our lives. Playing jan ken po for prizes, dancing the electric slide, singing happy birthday to ourselves, receiving $20 worth of free chips, and competing in the slots tournament were just some of the highlights of the reunion. Special recognition was given to John Sadowski whose 60th birthday was that very day! The best part was that no one looked over 60 years of age and everyone remembered the words to our class song.

Some of the first-timers to a class reunion were Gaylen Redoble, Rudy Ragel, and Penny (Kurashima) Iriye. Rudy lives in Las Vegas and Penny flew in from California as did Claudia (Lee) Johnson and Leigh and Mike Tamura. Glen Paculba drove all day from San Diego and arrived just as the party was getting started.

A big mahalo goes to the organizers Bernie (Oliveras) Salvador, Cynthia (Carlson) Shigemasa, Herbert Tanaka, Wesley Uyehara, and the rest of the gang. Special thanks to Bernie for getting Hawaiian Airlines to donate the many door prizes.

At the end of the evening, it was decided that the next class reunion will be in 2009 on Hawaii Island. Why 2009? Because in two years we’ll all be eligible to collect social security so that calls for another celebration! If you want more information on the 2009 reunion, email Coco (Apostol) Anguay at cla001@hawaii.rr.com, Amy (Shinmura) Kanemoto at kanemotow001@hawaii.rr.com, or Margie (Dimisillo) Hernandez at margie55@hawaii.rr.com.

Mahalo to Coco for sharing her report on the Las Vegas event with us!
